Flash Back Cafe (closed)

This cafe is no longer in business.

On the 7th day of Chinese New Year this year, we had our first cousins' day out of the year.

The weather wasn't fantastic and as we were strolling along Georgetown area like a tourist, enjoying the Cultural Celebration, the sky turned dark all of the sudden. None of us brought along umbrellas, so at the first sign of rain, we ran into the nearest cafe.

The Flash Back.

Lovely window by the entrance

I really love the window seat, but there were too many of us to squeeze into that area, next time maybe.

Pardon me that I didn't take any pictures of the coffee, nor the cake that we ordered (too busy talking). But I would really like to give some reviews here. The coffee was reasonably priced, RM4-RM5 compared to some of the cafes around Georgetown area. Nothing to shout about for the coffee, not FANTASTIC, but good.

We ordered a baked cheese cake to share and we really liked that. It's not too cheesy (so you can keep on eating and eating!), and it has got good texture and flavour! Definitely worth a try if you visit this cafe.

They're sitting at my spot!

Flash Back is also a backpacker hostel. With the rise of backpackers hostel and B&B in Georgetown recently, this is just one of the many. I didn't check out the room, so if you're keen I guess you could check out for yourself @ 04 2613053.

Would I come back again? Maybe, well, for the cheesecake :)

China House Penang

Before my December 2012 trip back home, I have never visited any of the recently-most-hip-cafes in Georgetown. I've always wanted to pay visit to some of the cooler ones, but time at home seems to slip through too fast. Way to fast!

Last December trip, my parents did not allow me to go anywhere out of Penang. Reason being, I was getting married on January and they wanted me to stay at home like a normal-well-behaved daughter! So... I did.

But I can't stay at home for entire week doing nothing, can I? So, one of the day, we had a cousins day out at Georgetown, doing some Cafe hopping. We were not very successful, we only did two on that particular day, but it's fun.

China House was our first cafe stop. China House is located in one of those old shop houses, where the house was not particularly wide, but extremely long! If you're staying in one, you can't simply shout to the person at the back of the house. China House has two addresses, one at Beach Street, another at Victoria Street. Simply because one is the front door and another was the back!

The general review suggested the food wasn't so good. Since we've already had Thai food for lunch, we weren't planning for any food there. However, the reviews suggested that coffees and desserts are nice there! So, here we go!

Verdict? Coffee was good, dessert we ordered was okay.

One of the reason we only had two cafes done in our cafe hopping mission, was we're too stucked in China House. We had fun drawing our "art" on the table, we had even more fun playing Jenga (we attracted many attentions from curious customers and waitors), we had even greater fun shiok-sendiri-ing at the art gallery at the top floor.

It's fun to do cafe hopping in Georgetown nowadays! I'm up for more!!!

French Toast with Greek Yoghurt & Banana

I have to say, this has got to be the best french toast that I've ever made in my kitchen!

I have some leftover Greek yoghurt from the desserts that I have no idea what are the other things that I can do with them. I found out on the websites, some people recommend to dress the french toast with Greek yoghurt instead of cream. Sounds good!

So, here it is!

Ingredients (for one pax):
  1. 2 slices of Multi-grain bread
  2. Banana (or any fruits of your choice, i.e. strawberries, blueberries, apples etc.)
  3. 1 Egg
  4. 2 tbsp Yoghurt
  5. 1 tbsp or more Milk
  6. 1/2 tsp Salt
  7. 1/2 tsp Caster sugar
  8. Honey or maple syrup
  9. A pinch of ground cinnamon
  10. Butter
Methods:
  1. In a bowl, mix the egg, milk, salt, sugar in a bowl.
  2. Heat the pan and butter the pan.
  3. Coat bread with the egg mixture and toast it in the pan. (If you happen to have leftover egg mixture, you could fry the egg mixture as well)
  4. Meanwhile, mix yoghurt with cinnamon.
  5. Dice the banana.
  6. Toast the bread until evenly brown.
  7. Arrange the french toast nicely on a plate with banana and yoghurt dressings.
  8. Sprinkle honey or maple syrup as much as you like.
  9. Serve.
This is the best French toast ever! =)

Orange Cheesecake in Glass

 photo 03orangeversions_zps5de8e7a5.jpg

In the last entry, I made the blueberry cheesecake brulee pot following strictly to the recipe. And now that I know how to work about this desserts, I made an orange version on my own.

It's even simpler as orange needs no cooking in the pot =)

Blueberry Cheesecake Brulee Pots

Now that the Wedding Trilogy was over, I'm back to my routine life. And to my surprise, I'm kinda glad to back to routine for the first time for my life.

There's a dessert recipe in the food magazine I bought that I've been wanting to try. I didn't have any programme on Friday evening, so I've got all the groceries needed and start working on it!

 photo 01-desserts_zps5acfd4b1.jpg

The desserts I made didn't seem as nice as the one in the magazine. First of all, I've got the wrong pot! These glasses are too high. In addition to that, I do not have blue torch, I could not caramelized the brown sugar on top. But still, I think they taste good.

However, too bad the Man didn't think so. The Man is not a cheese person, he thinks it's way too sour for him. So I have to add some honey on top for dressing before I served to him. To our disappointment, he still thinks it's sour! But oh well, he's a nice Man, he still finished them :)

I guess I'll make peach flavour in the future, berries are too sour. I hope this substitution will satisfy the man? Hopefully! =)

The recipe is available online, please refer to the here.

I love you all :)
