Sun, Sea, Beach! Glorious Island Holidays at Maldives

 photo 02_zps5f25772c.jpg
Different shade of blue caused by the sudden change in depth of the sea bed

I've always had a love-hate relationship with island holidays. I love the sun, the blue blue sea, the sandy beaches, the relaxing days, the calming sound of waves, the quiet underwater world, and forever busy fishes!

But, my skin doesn't love it so much. Every time I expose myself too much to UV on an island holidays, I come back with serious rashes that eventually leads to MC. Never fails!

However bad the condition is, I still brave myself to go for another one.

Maldives, a place where many claim to be paradise, best spot for honeymooners. A place we know, it's very expensive!

Nothing seems to beat sunbathing with a bottle of icy cold water

We've got our air tickets to Maldives at cheap. We bought them during MAS promotion, and it was cheaper than AirAsia and Tiger Airways! And that, I swear to you that is going to be the cheapest item for your entire stay in Maldives.

We stayed in Holiday Inn Kandooma Resort which was having some promotion when we booked. However, even with the promotion, it was the most expensive hotel lodging I've ever paid for since I started actively travel. But, if you were to compared with the other highly recommended luxury resorts, Holiday Inn may be one of the cheapest with reasonable good standard and service. (I'll talk about the hotel in a separate entry)

I totally agree with the claim that Maldives is one of the best spot for honeymooners, well, luxurious honeymooners at least.

You wake up every morning, enjoying a nice walk on the island, strolling with your lover slowly to the cafe to have your daily 1-2 hours breakfast. After breakfast, if you have not prepared for a sun bathing or swimming, you might again, make your way back to the room, change and get ready.

Then, you'll be applying sun block (or sun tan for some people) by the beach for each other. You might be reading a book by the beach, listening to music, meditating, sleeping, swimming, snorkeling etc. That might be another few hours of your day.

Just find any of the corner to relax

Everybody has a fave spot to read a book

By the time it hit 1-2pm, the sun is scorching hot to stay under it. You go back to your room, enjoy an outdoor shower. Probably, fall asleep again? Or, go to a spa for massage or facial. Or, to gym. Or, to read on your hammock.

 photo 07_zpsd6eae481.jpg
Or you can hide in the bushes like these hermit crabs

In the evening, when the sun is kinder. Everybody is out from room again. Some playing volleyball, some swimming, some learning surfing or sailing, some just taking pictures. Then, you'll have another 1-2 hours or even longer time for dinner.

Sail away to the paradise

By the time you go back to your room, you're so relaxed, you might fall asleep before 9pm. And you sleep all the way through until you wake up in the morning, naturally without the alarm clock at 6am to catch a glimpse of the sunrise.

It does sound like a perfect relaxing holiday isn't it?

Until you want to join other activities. Every single activities are charged. Snorkeling, diving, cruise to picnic island, fishing, searching for sea turtle, searching for whale shark etc. We didn't join all the activities obviously, but The Man did diving and we went for snorkel with whale shark together. Snorkel with whale shark was the highlight of my trip (will talk about this in later entry), however, the price was USD199 per pax, without tax. After tax, we paid almost USD500 in total for 2 pax. For the whale shark!

Besides, the short snorkel we had after seeing the whale shark was nothing compared to what we had in Sipadan Island. Same goes to The Man's diving trip. Disappointment of lack of beautiful corals and rare fishes makes us conclude that South East Asia still hold better spots for diving and snorkeling. We might be wrong for making this conclusion based on one small island among the thousands in Maldives. But comparing just Kandooma Island and Sipadan Island, Kandooma is nothing compared to Sipadan, underwater.

So I shall say Maldives is only paradise on land. The luxurious hotel that makes you feel like you deserves every single good service they can provide, at a price of course.

My colleague did say something very interesting about luxurious island getaway. We pay to be trapped in the island.

From source

No doubt.

But man, I paid to be trapped and I enjoyed to be trapped. (Sound unreasonably stupid!)

I enjoyed because it's the most healthy 5 days I've been; I enjoyed because it's so relaxing I forgot everything in a further red dot island; I enjoyed because I never get tired of the different shades of blue every single day.

But will I go back again? Well, most likely not. I guess I will explore the cheaper and better spots in South East Asia instead.

Khamryn Khiid, The Energy Centre

Sainshand (pronounced as "Sunshine"), is the capital of Dornogovi Province in Mongolia. It's eastern of Gobi Desert and can be reached by train from Ulaanbaatar. The journey on train will take you approximately 10-12hours one way. First class ticket costs 21,500 Tughrik; Third class ticket costs 7,500 Tughrik.

Our destination in Sainshand is Khamryn Khiid. This place is believed to have very high energy. People come all the way here, to absorb the energy, to cure sickness and make wishes in particular.

We took the evening train, departed from Ulaanbaatar at 4.30pm and reached Sainshand at 1.50am. Our guide picked us up at the train station, I was too tired to notice the station at that time. The journey from train station to Khamryn Khiid was about 1hour and we "checked in" to a ger around 3am. We had a 2 hour rest, before the guide woke us up again at 5am to witness the sunrise.

After the sunrise, we went to bell tower. According to my new Mongolian friend, Oyunbold, we strike the bell three times like we ring a door bell when we visit a friend. It's a form of "hello" to the being in this place.

After the greeting, we proceeded to Shambhalla. It's surrounded by 108 stupas, and believed to be having the highest energy in the world. People come here not just to pray, but also absorb energy from the ground.

Buddhism in Mongolia is very similar to what have been practiced by the Tibetans in Yunnan and Sichuan that I've seen. The stupa and the strong beliefs of the beings in nature.

Even the way they tie the colorful cloth after praying

After we prayed and tied the cloth on the rope, we're supposed to sing, to praise the God. However, I didn't know the song at all, so I just tried to hum the rhythm as much as I can. The lyrics of the song was actually carved onto the stone.

Lyrics on the stone

After all the ceremonies, we picked a nice spot to start energy absorption. Basically we have to lay all our personal belongings on the ground surrounding us, and lie down onto the ground. Just imagine yourself photo-synthesizing.

Our spot

I do not know how much energy I've managed to absorb from the ground. But, it surely is a wonderful time to sun bathe in the middle of desert. The cool breeze and soft morning sun light on my face, woke me up softly. I didn't feel tired at all even though I had so little sleep. So perhaps, the energy is true after all. Believe it or not.

By this time you should have noticed that my pictures are all having a red tint. To clarify this, I did not correct the saturation of the pictures. The rocks and sands in this part of the desert are naturally red in color. That's what made the desert exceptionally beautiful.

Sitting here, admiring the beauty of this place. It's not hard to understand why the locals have such a strong beliefs in their God.

It's simply too beautiful to be true.

 photo gobi01_zpsc0cd6bac.jpg

 photo gobi02_zps3d3500e0.jpg

 photo gobi03_zps6a7a7fff.jpg

Sungai Lembing for The Sunrise!

Sungai Lembing in Pahang state had becoming more and more popular over the years. To the extent, we had a real shock when we finally reached there.

Sungai Lembing town is really just a small town. So small that it couldn't contain the thousands of visitors that rushed to its town over the long weekend during Malaysia holiday. At night, there were only two restaurants that were opened to serve dinner. And one small little Malay food stall, and another smaller noodle stall. That's about it! And that particular weekend, there are more than 5000 tourists!

Sungai Lembing is popular for 3 things, sunrise at the cloud forest, rainbow waterfall, and the noodles. We only spent 2D1N there. Both sunrise and rainbow waterfall are morning activities, you can't achieve two things in a day, so we only saw the sunrise.

We have to wake up at 4.45am, and depart from our room at 5.15am. It's really a mistake that we forgot to bring torch lights. Lucky enough we were holding iPhone, so we use the flashlights. At the same time, thanks to so many other tourists, we "tumpang" the lights.

The staircase to the top was really tiring. Especially to the senior citizens. So if you're bringing any, please take good care of them.

Below are all the pictures, from before to after the sunrise. The luck was not on us that day, there were thick clouds over the sun, it's definitely not the perfect sunrise you saw on Sungai Lembing posters.

With the rush of tourists to this place, if you're planning to go, do plan off the peak season.

Went out to get a packet of potato chips while my dinner was baking in the oven. Sinful, yes. I have to admit. I had been eating a lot of potato chips this week, why was it? Hormone? Stress?

Anyway, I liked the way the clouds formed just above the flats. So I quickly snapped a picture before I got my dinner out from the oven :)
